What Constitutes Harassment

Harassment is defined as unwelcome conduct based on an individual’s protected characteristics, including but not limited to race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, sexual stereotyping, gender identity, or sexual orientation), national origin, age, disability, genetic information, or any other characteristic protected by law. Examples include, but are not limited to:

  • Verbal Harassment: Unwelcome jokes, slurs, or other verbal abuse.
  • Physical Harassment: Unwelcome physical contact, gestures, or actions.
  • Visual Harassment: Offensive posters, emails, or other visual materials.
  • Hostile Work Environment: Any conduct that creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive workplace.
  • Retaliation: Adverse actions taken against an individual for reporting or opposing harassment.

Examples of Prohibited Conduct

  • Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, or other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature.
  • Intimidation, threats, or bullying behavior.
  • Humiliation, degradation, or public shaming.
  • Discrimination in hiring, promotion, or any other employment-related decisions.
  • Creating or contributing to an abusive, intimidating, or offensive work environment.
  • Retaliation against anyone who reports harassment or discrimination.
